The Backstory

Having outgrown their home in one of Minneapolis’s western suburbs, this family of five was ready to move closer to the city while staying deeply connected to nature. After exploring several homes, they discovered an open lot in a distinctive pocket of town; one that offered space for a future treehouse, backyard sports, and frequent encounters with local wildlife.
Inspired by the quiet utility and natural beauty of homes they had seen in the western U.S., the design weaves that sensibility into the surrounding neighborhood. A restrained palette of natural materials was selected to weather gracefully over time and extend indoors, supporting an active, adventurous lifestyle. Above all, the homeowners wanted a house that truly belonged to everyone, where nothing felt off limits to their kids.

Design Goals:

  • Open concept on main floor for general living areas

  • Spacious kitchen with walk-in pantry, large island, and two dishwashers

  • Large deck with room for grilling and outdoor dining

  • Large mudroom with separate mail drop and charging area

  • Area in lower level for entertainment and play

Design Solutions

  • Garage spaces were split between two different areas- this gave the main level rooms the space they needed while keeping the home from pushing too far back on the lot.

  • A balanced floor plan maintains an open connection between living, dining, and kitchen, with separate spaces for quiet and privacy.

  • A large drop zone and mudroom contain the mess of everyday life.

  • The home office, an important piece of this home, was designed to be comfortable and rustic.

  • The lower level bar includes shell casings provided by the owner as ‘rivets’ around the countertop, and a cold-rolled steel backsplash.

  • A sport court under the garage is viewable from the exercise room
